Expectavi Dominum is a setting of verses from Psalm 39 (Psalm 40 in Protestant translations of the Psalter). This prayer is rich in expressions of trust and patience, and in pleas for deliverance from affliction. My setting is austere but dramatic, with sudden piano and forte contrasts and pungent, tonal dissonances that lend a sense of urgency to this complex prayer.
The work was composed to honor my colleague, Dr. David Stein, upon the occasion of his retirement as Director of Choral Activities at California State University, East Bay in June 2002. He conducted the premiere in Oakland, California, leading the University Singers in a stirring performance. Expectavi Dominum is published by Boosey and Hawkes.
