Completed in 1991, Meditation could hardly form
a more striking contrast with Frammenti,
my only other solo piano work. Neo-tonal in language, it is a brief (three-minute)
ruminative, introspective essay written as a tribute to my friend and colleague
Robert Basart (to whom it is dedicated) shortly before he died. It is intensely
private music, and its intimate character may put one in mind of a quiet
exchange between old friends.
Meditation was commissioned by Fallen Leaf Press as part of its
"Various Leaves" anthology, published in 1992.
