Program Note for Fourplay (1997)
for string quartet
It is somehow fitting that this month should see the premieres of two works my orchestral work, TheRight Road Lost, and tonight's work that could not be more different in mood and tone. "Lost" is a dark and disturbing work that chronicles a time of spiritual desolation and confusion, whereas tonight's work is as light and uncomplicated a piece as I have ever written. While no one will ever hear these two works on the same program, I think that in my own mind, FourPlay provides a kind of sweet balm for the unanswered questions of "Lost".
My thanks to the Klee Quartet for putting together a lively and spirited performance.
