Vanguard Voices is a model of a community choral organization, sponsoring composition competitions (Eli, Eli! received Honorable Mention in the 2004 competition), commissioning new works and producing fine recordings - all superbly run by Director G. Kevin Dewey in Dearborn, MI. "Eli, Eli!" is a setting of one the Seven Last Words from the Cross, a quotation by Jesus of the prophetic first verse of Psalm 22. The setting weaves together the original Aramaic with its English translation.
